About the Artwork

A larger than life sculpture balances atop a domed mosaic base. A large bronze hand offers guidance and anchors the rays that extend in a flowing arc to the sky. The top is capped with a smaller balancing hand reaching toward the heavens. Don Reynolds explains the kinetic and interactive nature of the sculpture Enlightenment: "This sculpture rotates by pushing or pulling the outstretched hand in either direction, the effect being a constantly changing composition observed from any vantage point. The top hand revolves on the invisible axis like a gyroscopic sense of balance." "When observed from inside the Academy," he continues, "this sculpture connects by a random selection of students and professors alike, when, on occasion, it points to you. The intent in the design of this sculpture rests in the attempt to suggest a path to enlightenment. The willingness of the student to reach out and take the hand of a mentor and allow the self to follow is basic to learning. It is the student's energy that is first required to set the dynamics of learning into motion. That initial force leads to growth, development, change, and, hopefully, to enlightenment."
